Encounters     Out with the Old – In with the New

PARK MUSIK New Horizons is approaching its 20th anniversary. For this joyous occasion, we are going to celebrate with a series of small surprises.

Saturday, 4:00 pm: The journey from the parking lot behind the Nahetal Golf Club to the Trombacher Hof is ca. 2 km. The stillness of the field, forest, and meadow allow your mind to escape the hustle and bustle of the day. Stations with music by the young German composer, guitarist, and multimedia sound artist Tobias Klich, winner of the German Music Competition “Composition”, beckon the guests to pause and listen. At other locations, spherical glass chimes from two verrophones (Sinfonia di vetro) meld with the surrounding nature. In between, there is a surprising drumming scene (Erwin Ditzner).

Once the guests have arrived at the Trombacher Hof, they are awaited by an affectionately designed picnic area at the babbling Trombach Brook. (Guests are asked to bring their own food; drinks will be provided.) The relaxed atmosphere offers guests the opportunity to learn more and have an in-depth discussion about the glass instruments and verrophone.

Upon sunset, the proceedings move to the former convent chapel, with its stone stage. A short film, “20 Years of PARK MUSIC”, brings fond memories of years past to life. Afterwards, Tobias Klich takes the stage with his performance of “Goya’s Hands” for guitar, another work for guitar and four hands, and a world premiere of the poem “Umsonst” (“In Vain”) by Paul Celan, which serves as a birthday present for an enthusiastic guest. All the while, glass plays a special and original role in combination with the voice of Sigune von Osten. Thereafter, a conversation with the composer takes place.

The finale of the evening is heralded in by an extraordinary drum duel: Andreas Dänel (tap dance and violin) beats the drums with his feet while playing the violin. Erwin Ditzner uses his hands to beat a response on the drums. The performance concludes with a collaborative drum improvisation, ending at around 10:00 pm. The experiences of the evening linger in the guests’ consciousness during their quiet walk back to the parking lot in the night.

Sunday, 11:00 am: On Sunday morning, we remember Josef Anton Riedl, composer, multimedia artist, festival organiser, and so much more, who was a guest at the first PARK MUSIC in 1996 and gave an unforgettable balloon performance. He passed away in March of this year at 88. Josef was very connected with the Trombacher Hof and its residents. During the morning walk from the parking lot to the courtyard, Sigune von Osten reads aloud selections from his letters.

Once the guests have arrived at the courtyard, the path leads to the former chapel. A video shot at the Trombacher Hof introduces the guests to the composer and his unusual multimedia works through short films.

Afterwards, the proceedings move to the studio, where the exhibition “Optische Lautgedichte” (“Optical Sound Poems”) introduces the guests to Riedl the illustrator and the unusual composer through the piano piece “Ausfluss, Spur, Niederschlag, Nachhall” (“Downpour, Trail, Rainfall, Reverberation”), which is paired with a sonata by Pierre Boulez that Riedl highly regarded (Pi-hsien Chen).After the subsequent picnic break at the Trombach, the festival concludes with musical fireworks: Three Alpine horns (Alpcologne), electroacoustic hurdy-gurdy (Matthias Loibner), a musical saw, and additional unusual musical instruments (Felipe Pantone) accompany the guests to the Trombach Shire, replete with larger-than-life grass, bright yellow Canadian goldenrod, fuchsia Himalayan balsam, and softly glowing blueish silver thistle. The humming of the insects and the rustling of the breeze create an atmosphere that the guests will rave about for years to come.
